Hi, I'm from Trinidad and there's a celebration we have every year called Carnival, various bands dress up in beads and feathers and dance around the capital. However, this year, one of bands call TRIBE has made all their costumes into sexy first nation costumes, each one carrying a name of a first nation Tribe, such as Apache, Cheyenne, Mohican and Sioux. Can you help me highlight this and just let the world know this shit is happening? Thanks!
yo like that’s so complicated bc like where i’m from we have a lot of shit that we learned from like african ppl and then in the gulf generally like african culture is super mixed with like indian shit like carnival in new orleans with like the costumes etc. but also like there’s this generalizing force that goes into deploying indian imaginaries and that shit’s genocidal? honestly i would just talk to people one on one and try and build.
can you please stop using the words white and european interchangeably? not all the european were colonialists and some of us were colonized like indigenous ppl everywhere. "english, spanish, basque, sami, big difference, they're all the same" :(
so what about those of us with mixed race identities? should we only hate a fraction of ourselves? or, like, do poc and white people thinking we don't fit in with either group do a good enough job of that?
obviously mixed race kids can do whatever the hell they want. the point is that mixed race kids have their racial identity formed under the fucking aegis of white supremacy so it fucks them up just like it fucks everyone up? and the notion of racial purity is completely complicit with white suprematism, which regulates bodies through the rubric of its own fucked racial ideology, ranking ethnic groups, national origins, skin tones, dialectal variance, etc.?
so like “hating yourself” is just another violence of white suprematism and european colonialism? so like i mean work duly on your own liberation; that shit doesn’t include becoming a collaborator with white suprematism and colonialism.
Is it cultural appropriation for a PoC (not necessarily African) to for example get dreadlocks if it isn't something within their own culture but they do have a respect for it and know it's significance of it in another culture?
this is not an ask a blog question this is a have a critical discussion with your peers
Hey, on October 12th you responded to some idiot's submission by saying, "you are gay." I'd just like to point out that your response is derogatory toward gay people as being gay shouldn't be likened to an insult. It'd be cool if you would refrain from disparaging other oppressed groups in your responses to the dumb white masses. Thanks. :)
you have all these white people shaking asking " uhhhh is this okay if i do this" as if you are head honcho or know everything . hhaha how naive.you will never tell me what i can and cannot do. you will never tell me i am racist without me blowing it off because I AM THE ONLY ONE INSIDE OF MY HEAD and i know i am not. people really need to stop giving you the power it is sad. just because you can read a few google arguments and custer died for your sins does not mean you are smart.
"you will never tell me i am racist without me blowing it off"
I don’t even need to try, y’all are like a perpetual shit machine
you are using systematic racism to dispel and release your hatred onto the world without understanding a thing about it other than what people around you are saying. you are like a robot repeating the same old tired racist arguments over and over. *knocks on head, is there anything in there. nobody likes to listen to a racist, which you are. there is a such thing as racism between individuals, and you certainly are a proud racist! congratulations! oh your ancestors would be proud!
you silly, trying to segregate whilst fighting for equal rights. it is that point in the worlds cycle in which all cultures will blend. not just yours, but ALL. nobody is going to keep their cultures to themselves, we will all share. there is no stopping it. there is no intellectualizing you could possibly do to stop the natural laws. this is part of the journey for humankind that we all melt together. this is globalization honey and it is here to stay. :]
Certain members of the white proportion of human being are and have been absolutely disgusting to people of other races and those people are monsters. However it is wrong of you to assume that every white person is horrible because that isn't how it is. Even if the vast majority of white people are racist pigs there are plenty of us who aren't.
I put a sugar-skull style sticker on my car before I started educating myself on cultural appropriation. I'm a white, Australian women and I like skulls, mexican style art/colour and that kind of aesthetic but obviously I don't want to culturally appropriate. Do you have any tips on the dos and donts of cultural appropriation when it comes to accessories - ie. stickers, bags, jewellery, clothing, etc?
Hi, this is kind of random but i did a google search for "I wish I was a native american", i dunno why, looking for something to connect to i suppose, and i found your post. It was so much like me that i decided to contact you to see if you truely meant it. I am a 23 year old college (well maybe) student, and i am going to do the same thing when i graduate. If i can hold out till then. Its been my dream for a while to wander and see the world, living off wild food
is black people straightening their hair cultural appropriation
Black people straightening their hair is a cultural practice of the body that’s been deeply affected by white supremacy. Because racist discourses of beauty valorize “European” over “African” features, curly, kinky, nappy hair is largely considered inferior and displeasing, while straight hair is considered “good”.
Chris Rock even made a movie about it.
Cultural appropriation requires the appropriator to hold a position of power over the assemblage of discourses and signs of a culture, so that they feel entitled to appropriate cultural practices. This is different from the different relationship of subaltern subjects to cultural practices imposed as part of a regime of oppression.
I was immediately taken back by the term cultural appropriation. It seems to be a negative term for cultural assimilation but in a pejorative context. Most of the articles I've read have used it as only applying to those who belonging to a dominant culture (i.e. white people). (ex: white people can't wear dreadlocks) Cultural appropriation just seems to be a fancy word that intellectualizes and justifies racism. My question, Is my gut feeling right here? Is the term itself racist by definition?
So...okay. My mom has been a Unitarian Universalist for forever, and although I don't usually attend, one of the things I always liked about that church is that they acknowledge and incorporate teachings and values from non-Christian religions, as long as it fits their basic theme of "love one another; help people; be just, etc." But then recently, I got to thinking and realized that it's mostly white hippie types at these churches. Is this type of thing appropriation?
I think there’s a lot of internal UU conversations going on about this, maybe check out the youth groups, or message boards? You might get into some good real talk and figure some shit out.
