so do you consider otaku (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku#In_English) to be cultural appropriation? how does the anime-loving, cosplaying, peace-sign-posing, semi-japanese subculture play into cultural appropriation?
WE WOULD HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT AND EXAMINE IT! WE DON’T LIKE TO MAKE RASH DECISIONS WHEN IT COMES TO IMPORTANT THINGS LIKE APPROPRIATION AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE, OR CULTURE IN GENERAL!
have like a million people already pointed out to you that dreadlocks by themselves aren't cultural appropriation? i mean, sure, toss in some rasta gear and a blacklight bob marley poster you you probably spent your student loans on and then you've got a big problem. the hairstyle by itself, no. it's just ugly.
ACTUALLY, WE AT FUCK YEAH CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! ARE VERY TORN UP ABOUT DREADLOCKS! WE THINK THEY ARE VERY COMPLEX TEXTS!
I am a bit confused about the cultural appropriation discussions that I've seen on tumblr, and I'd really like it if you or others could help me understand your arguments. Is it cultural appropriation if my father, who is white, wears moccasins that he bought from a Native-American-run store on a Native American reservation? If so, is he doing something unethical? Also, if I (a white person in the U.S.) get my hair cut in a mohawk (which I have done in the past), some people have said this is cultural appropriation, but am I doing something unethical by getting that particular haircut? If it is the case that being a member of a majority group and wearing the clothing or hairstyle of a minority group is appropriation, would it also be appropriation for a person of Japanese descent in Japan (where Koreans face a lot of discrimination) to wear traditional Korean clothing, or for a cis man in the U.S. to wear women's clothing?
NO, MOCASSINS ARE COOL, AND INDIAN-MADE CRAFTS THAT YOU BUY FROM REAL LIFE INDIANS ARE PROBS VERY GOOD QUALITY!
BUT YES, BEING A WHITE MAN ON OCCUPIED LAND, YR FATHER IS DOING SOMETHING RATHER UNETHICAL! A DISCUSSION OF COLONIALISM AND THE ECONOMIC PROCESSES OF OPPRESSION THAT KEEP INDIANS ON RESERVATIONS AND FORCE COMMUNITIES TO RESORT TO COMMODIFIED MARKETING OF CULTURAL SIGNS MAY BE IN ORDER!
ALSO I COULD GO ASK MY MOHAWK FRIEND IF YOU WANT, IF YR HAIRCUT IS STRESSING YOU OUT.
SO YR DAD’S WHITE, BUT ARE YOU WHITE? CUZ IF YR LIKE, MOHAWK, OR SOME SHIT, I DON’T SEE THE PROBLEM. WE HAVE CERTAINLY BEEN KNOWN TO SEDUCE SOME WHITE PEOPLE INTO INTERBREEDING WITH US.
ALSO THERE’S THIS THING CALLED CULTURAL STUDIES, Y’ALL! AND ALSO THIS THING CALLED POSTCOLONIAL STUDIES AND ALSO SEMIOTICS! THEY ARE THE SOCIAL SCIENCES THAT STUDY THE MEANING OF CULTURAL SIGNIFICATION IN ITS HISTORICAL SOCIAL POLITICAL SEXUAL ECONOMIC AND SO ON CONTEXT! IT IS HIGHLY RELEVANT TO THIS DISCUSSION, AND A KNOWLEDGE OF THESE DISCIPLINES WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING YOU MAKE YR OWN DECISIONS, INSTEAD OF NOT KNOWING WHAT THE POLITICS OF WHAT YOU DO ARE.
You have a really great site with lots of cool pics I like looking at! Keep it up, its good to have a site where to find all these cool pics in one place. I am really into Native American stuff too, so I like what your doing here!
You have pictures of white kids throwing up gang signs? How is that cultural appropriation? Is there a particular culture that gang signs belong to? Is it a culture that does not involve white kids? That seems to be what you are implying. So there is some non-white culture (I am using that word in your way) what has "gang signs" as a cultural component? Wow, that sounds pretty fucking racist of you. Are you labeling some non-white culture as being "criminal" or "gang"-identified?
WOAH I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YR TALKING ABOUT! THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING QUESTION.
NO PARTICULAR CULTURE OWNS GANGS, WE DON’T THINK.
HOWEVER, WE DO LABEL SOME CULTURES AS BEING CRIMINAL AND GANG-IDENTIFIED.
FOR EXAMPLE, GANG CULTURES ARE GENERALLY GANG-IDENTIFIED. ALSO, CERTAIN CHEESE CULTURES. ALSO WE GUESS GAY CULTURE IN COUNTRIES WHERE THE QUEERS ARE OUTLAWED.
BUT FOR REAL, SOME VERY GANG-IDENTIFIED WHITE PEOPLE ARE OUT THERE, WATCH OUT!
How come most of your pictures up here are of young girls, some scantily clad, some half naked? How do you find these pictures? Are all the girls of age? Do you know them? Do you have the rights to re-post pictures of their half naked bodies? Do you pay them? Are you exploiting them? Is that better than cultural exploitation?
WE HAVE YET TO FIGURE OUT WHY WHITE PEOPLE LIKE PUTTING WHITE GIRLS IN ADVERTISING. WE THINK IT MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE HETEROPATRIARCHY.
In regards to the lauren gregg pic, you know you could be getting asked because you need to have lauren gregg's permission to post the photograph and could get a DCMA warning filed on you if you don't.... it's copyrighted material that you need permission to post.
FUCK YEAH CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IS A NON-PROFIT EDUCATIONAL BLOG. IF YOU WANT, WE’LL ATTRIBUTE EVERY PHOTO YOU WANT, FELLOW ANTI-RACIST BLOGGER, THANX FOR THE HEADS UP!
thank you for doing what you do, it is so important and i love the lack of hem-hawing: "uhh maybe its racist but it might be interpreted different ways i um dont want to offend anyone but, etc" NO!
can i ask you where you stand with old pawn/trading post native american silver jewelery? i own a vintage shop and i really like old silver jewelry because of the craftsmanship and use of coral/turquoise, along with customers who like silver jewelery for 'the southwest look'. i like to buy native american silver jewelry from flea markets and garage sales but would never consider buying new through boutiques because im not aware of the conditions under which those pieces were mass produced.. what are your thoughts?
REALLY, WE’D HAVE TO TRACE THE HISTORY OF EACH PARTICULAR PIECE OF SILVERWORK, AND ALSO A LOT OF THAT JEWELRY IS MADE BY HISPANIC FOLKS AND WHITE FOLKS. THERE’S ALSO A PRETTY COOL HIPPIE SILVERSMITHING TRADITION, YOU KNOW.
SO YEAH, IT’D BE DOWN TO THE PARTICULAR PIECE, BUT THNX FOR THINKING ABOUT IT.
