i follow snuffboxisdead because she's run a great blog and i find myself agreeing with her a lot. Cultural appropriation is ridiculous. It happens to my heritage every March 17. I thought you'd have something insightful to say about it, but you're actually a total asshole with a lame blog. And it's not even a funny kind of asshole. It's just the run of the mill internet asshole looking for people who are going to agree with them and blowing off people who don't think they're the shit.
Yeah that's the weird part, they're not my friend, I don't even know who that person is and I was like YO DON'T DRAG ME INTO YOUR FAIL WTF? Saying that being flippant online is "as obnoxious as" racism/appropriation=LOL
I for one am glad you don't take yourself seriously. If you spent hours typing out long responses for people who want to know if their mohawks are appropriating another culture, they'd be like TL;DR LOL and white folks will be like YOU TAKE YRSELF TOO SRSLY REAL LIFE ISN'T LIEK THAT. You can't end CA by yelling at people ON THE INTERNET so you might as well have some fucking fun. Good work, you guys are fucking badass.
to the latina asking about painting herself up like a calavera--i'm dominican and i wouldn't do it, a lot of other latin@s give mexicans a lot of shit. and anyway we have our own awesome cultures to refer to!
Do you think a white person getting scarification is cultural appropriation?I really like how it looks, but I don't want to be an asshat. I have no intentions of getting anything for the purpose of looking "exotic" or any fucked up reason like that, and I the design wouldn't be one of importance to any cultures but is the act itself appropriative? Sorry if I came off as an ass.
still waiting for the moment when white ppl decide flaying is a cool mod.
Okay I was scrolling through this blog and is awesomeness and read that you were given bindis by your friends. So its okay to wear bindis? But its not okay to wear dream catcher shirts or well, I can't think of examples. ? Because I'm guessing when you wore than bindis you went like "herderrrppp im indian now (like how others pretend to be native with their faceaint and HOW" you were just appreciating the culture. But I'm like asking, is there a line between appreciating and mocking?
i don’t actually wear bindis but if i did i would probably stand in front of a fan while burning agarbatti playing a.r. rahman videos on youtube and visualizing himanshu suri.
This isn't entirely about cultural appropriation, but I want to tell you anyway because I think you would care. My high school football team recently played against a team called The Tribe, and for the pep rally our cheerleaders decorated a HUGE poser that read "TP The Tribe" and it had a teepee covered in toilet paper and a sad looking cartoon Native American tied up in it as well. I got really offended about it and complained. The school didn't give a shit, and my friends said to lighten up.
fuck man, football is mortifying. so is school.
also you’re wearing a fucking crown on your picture, that’s cool.
I got referred to this blog by snuffboxisdead and i was excited to see what you had but yeah, bummer. You're as obnoxious as the individuals appropriating other cultures. Lame. Pages and pages of hipsters with head dresses and you never answering anyone's questions. Anyway, please respond to me in "ironic" internet speak and keep avoiding any personal responsibility for attention you clearly were grabbing for but not ready to handle. That's what I expect from you, so I'd hate to be disappointed.
this is the best tumblr ever. Srsly! WTF is wrong with people? Any day now I expect someone to bitch at me for eating at a "fusion" restaurant or listening to Aesop Rock. Postmodernism happened right? And who owns iconography anyway? NO ONE
re: the person who doesn't want to let go of the word gyp. WTF is "a hypothetical Roma"? do they only get hypothetically thrown out of countries by hypothetical police? do they only get hypothetically targeted for hypothetical fucking sterilization? [see DifferenTakes issue 71 at the PopDev program, it won't let me post a link to back my shit up]
While I find the concept of fighting cultural appropriation admirable, you personally are incredibly annoying and repulsive. I fail to see how acting in such a manner will help your cause, since it will make some (such as myself) unfollow you. Being racist does not help your cause either, seeing as the blog is about cultural sensitivity - perhaps you should practise what you preach for once.
There's a story about my high school and how we got our mascot... They asked the first class of art students what the mascot should be, they said "A warrior, like Conan the Barbarian." But the principle said, "Hmmm, like a Native American warrior? That's brilliant!" But everyone was pissed, because he never realized that Conan was in fact, not Native American, but instead was based off of Celtic warriors. Hence our horribly appropriated mascot. The Westwood Warrior.
Nobody ever believes me when I say I'm Spanish because I'm 100% white. Does that mean I can't wear Spanish clothes without getting made fun of on here? Because I find that there are people of varying skin colors in every country and it's more than a bit offensive that any one person feels entitled to make image-based judgments on what's acceptable for anyone to wear.
you mean spanish in the sense of i’m from fucking spain, fuck yeah paella and what like, what do spanish people enjoy besides paella? latinamerican silver and the monarchy?
who the fuck do you hang around with that thinks being a fucking spaniard somehow conflicts with being like white or whatever? is this like, one of those situations where all your ‘friends’ are complete douchebags who make fun of you because they think spain is in south america
because that is not a problem that this blog can really address
honestly, dgaf about this question, you just need to seriously reconsider the choices you make in your social life.
How do you know the person who created or is wearing that "Find your inner native" shirt isn't native? i, for one, am native. I am 1/2 native. However I look as irish as can be. People judge me all the time for things I put into my life and they don't think I really feel for and understand the history of whatever it is I might be saying/wearing/doing.
the notion that everyone has a tiny cupboard indian somewhere in their body like some like, abscess of nativeness, like, an indian tumor, is creep city.
I am mixed race and it would be such an insult to my heritage to appear on this blog under the FALSE assumption that I wasn't of a certain culture because of how I looked. Just because somebody is white and looks unassuming and does wear something from the far east, doesn't mean they're trying to insult. This whole blog is based on assumptions in terms of appearance.
um we have like, tons of posts about how light-skinned folk and mixed folk are often like overlooked as ppl of color with real valid identities and so on, and how esp. ppl’s heritage gets overlooked and erased, ‘whitewashed’ as it were? and um HOLY SHIT WAIT WHAT THE PERSON WRITING THIS ALSO IS MIXED HOLY FUCK OH MY GOD
also um being ‘white’ isn’t like, this thing that just happens it’s like, sort of this whole complex assemblage of like, cultural identifications, historical processes, racial ideologies, genealogical reckoning, etc? so ppl aren’t just ‘white’ because they like ‘look’ ‘white’? it’s like, an active thing?
also um no one said that people were ‘trying to insult’? this blog isn’t about taking insult, but more a generalized sense of ew, oh, ew, oh, ew ew?
sorry there’s a couple of things i don’t understand like, far eastern? fucking like, far from where
also wtf is ‘looks unassuming’?
do you mean that vacant stare people have sometimes? is that it?
Does this mean an Indian boy can't wear jeans? Jeans are pretty western/american.
fuck you and fuck anyone who says ‘american’ to mean ‘um i’m white and i have no fucking clue what the fuck i am, where i’m from, or what my place is in the world.’
also fuck you, jeans are made of cotton, which is american, in the sense of the actual fucking word, that is, from the continent that europeans call america, unlike um, white people, who are from fucking europe
and fuck isn’t europe to the east of the americas?
anyway as i was fucking saying, cotton is a fucking american fabric, fuck you again, white people um drew shit like, um fucking SHEEP growing on a plant, because they could just not fucking conceive of fucking cotton, so fuck them.
also have you seen indian boys in jeans? because it’s like, sex country.
god, fuck. jesus. sheep. on a plant. in all seriousness, fucking europeans were sitting around, shitting themselves with confusion, making fucking woodcuts of sheep-bearing plants, and then their shitty great-great-great-grandchildren call themselves ‘american’ and walk around like they fucking invented textiles.
Given that it's not even clear 'gyp' comes from 'gypsy' (the Oxford English Dictionary lists 'gee-up' and 'gippo' in the sense of 'short jacket' as possible alternate derivations), it seems inappropriate to castigate someone for causing hypothetical offense to a hypothetical Roma by using it.
