THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CULTURAL APPROPRIATION AND CULTURAL APPRECIATION. All cultures appropriate. Maybe we could appreciate though, instead? I understand it's in insult that hipsters wear head-dresses/saris/crosses etc. to people of those beliefs when its purely worn for fashion. But what if someone not from that culture, but appreciates it, knows it meaning, for example. Is that truly offensive? I think that anyone from any ethnicity should be able to choose what they believe in.
Did you know that Johnny Depp is going to be playing Tanto in the upcoming film "The Lone Ranger" next year? I'm rather disturbed by the movie poster (Johnny Depp with a painted face and a crow...hat?) and I thought you might also find it offensive. I know Johnny Depp has claimed to have Cherokee ancestry (because that's never been said before) but I'm still really uncomfortable. Also, it's financially backed by Disney. Thoughts?
johnny depp is less sexy as his bullshit increases.
Hi, I was thinking of getting a mandala tattooed on me. I designed it myself, and I am very familiar with the meaning. My family were practicing Buddhist for 7 or 8 years. My parents went on pilgrimages, we started a monastery, we took refuge in a lama, Guru Rimpoche; we grew up as buddhist, it was our religion. We do not practice buddhism so much anymore, but we still take the teachings and values and apply them to our lives. But now I am thinking twice about this tattoo.
Bill Reid, Haida Grizzly bear print as a tattoo. As a non-native and with awareness of cultural appropriation and overall indigenous North American exploitation. I tracked down the president of the Haida Nation and articulated my various personal reasons for desiring such a piece. Got approval and acceptance from both him and the artists granddaughter. I am an American-mut, from a mixture of ethnicities. Your thoughts on this endeavor?
I'm genuinely fascinated with the history and such of shrunken heads and head shrinking and the Jivaro. I look at this stuff not as a "cool morbid oddity" but as a genuine interest in history - and a reminder of how white people caused the slaughter of many for the sake of having this discussion piece in their homes. I was genuinely repulsed to see that most of the "shrunken head" tag on tumblr consists of white people with shrunken head tattoos. What are your views on this? (cont. next post)
(cont. from previous post) - And would it be upsetting for someone like me, being white, to be up doing speeches about this topic like I do? And to be so into the topic and deep in research of someone elses culture?
So I'm not native but there was a party at my school w/ the theme western bros and navahoes. When I heard that one of my casual friends attended it actually broke my heart. It upsets me that at a supposedly progressive school people can still be incredibly oppressive pieces of shit. What should I do to make people realize they're being racist assholes?
