Anonymous asked: how can i stop hating white people? i have to work with them and it'd be a hell of a lot easier if i didn't want to constantly punch them in the face
in the fire next time, baldwin writes about how he used to hate white people, but then started pitying them, in order to not hate them anymore.
but no matter how generous you are, because whiteness is built on white supremacy, white people — even the anti-racists — just can’t help themselves. you probably won’t stop being harassed, or outright attacked — and those little insults, the little comments, the little lingering doubt as to whether you’re just imagining your white co-workers treating you differently, with less dignity, are all attacks — any time soon. they won’t give you a reason to feel any differently about them, in the long run. how can they, if their entire concept of themselves rests on a history of considering themselves superior to other humans, and acting the part?
maybe you could do like james, and try out pity.
